Extract from 3rd Letter from Sidi Ahmad al-Badawi Darqawi (qaddas Allahu sirru); 

...You must absolutely and definitely be on your guard against the ultimate source of all sources of disaster and that is satisfaction with the self and unleashing the tongue too freely in speech.

The tongue is a wild beast. If someone unleashes it, it will devour him. A man may utter a single word which he is unconcerned with, but which becomes the cause of his falling seventy years into the Fire of Jahannam. 

If someone utters one word about his brother believer which he dislikes, (meaning Ghiyba backbiting) it is as if he had committed fornication with his mother in the Ka'ba thirty-three times, as is related...

(Ghiyba backbiting: “In the sight of Allah, backbiting is worse than adultery and consuming alcohol because adultery and consuming alcohol is between you and Allah, if you repent, Allah will forgive you. However backbiting is never forgiven until the person you spoke against forgives you”. Hadith)
