10th Muharram or Day of Ashura - Dhikr and Wird

The Various Dhikr, Wirds, Acts of being Generous and Reward of Fasting on the  Day of Ashura - based on Sunni Hadith traditions.

The Historical Significance of ‘Ashura by Taken from Ghunya li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq by Sayyidina Abdul Qadir al-Jilani qaddas Allahu Sirru.

Ashura is a day of great historical significance.

On this day: Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) accepted the repentance of Sayyidina Adam ('Alaihis-Salaam) after his exile from Paradise;

Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) saved Sayyidina Nuh ('Alaihis-Salaam) and his companions in the ark;

Allah extinguished the fire in which Sayyidina Ibrahim ('Alaihis-Salaam) was thrown by Nimrod;

And Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) spoke directly to Sayyidina Musa ('Alaihis-Salaam) and gave him the Commandments.

On this same 10th of Muharram, Sayyidina Ayyub ('Alaihis-Salaam) was restored to health (from leprosy);

Sayyidina Yusuf ('Alaihis-Salaam) was reunited with his father Ya’qub ('Alaihis-Salaam);

Sayyidina Yunus ('Alaihis-Salaam) was taken out from the belly of the fish;

and the sea was divided as the nation of israel was delivered from captivity and Pharoah’s army was destroyed.

‘Ashura is also the day when Sayyidina Dawud ('Alaihis-Salaam) was forgiven;

the kingdom of Sulaiman ('Alaihis-Salaam) was restored;

Sayyidina Isa ('Alaihis-Salaam) was raised to Jannah

and Sayyidina al-Husayn (Radiyallahu 'anh) (the Holy Prophet’s, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam, grandson) achieved the honour of Martyrdom.

Worship Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) as much as you can on ‘Ashura. Whoever fasts on this day is like one who fasts all his life.

Whoever clothes a naked person Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) will release him from a painful punishment.

He who visits a sick person, Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) will grant him a reward that will not be decreased.

Whoever places his hand on an orphan’s head, or feeds a hungry person or gives water to a thirsty man, Allah will feed him a feast from Paradise and will quench his thirst with Salsabil (a wine that does not intoxicate).

And who ever takes a Ghusl on this day will enjoy excellent health and freedom from sickness and indolence.

Whoever provides generously for his family on this day, Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) will be generous to him throughout this year. And whoever applies Kuhl to his eyes will never suffer from eye-sore again, inSha’Allah.

O’ Allah! Bless us to perform good deeds and gain their reward on ‘Ashura. Make the new year one of unity, cooperation and success for Muslims in this city and around the world. Ameen.

Tonight Nafl Salat for the Eve of Ashura A famous book taught in Tarim, Yemen called Kanz al-Najah wa Surur-(The Treasures of Success and Happiness) the author of the book maintains that on ‘Ashura, ‘One should stay up the whole night in worship, reciting the Quran or making remembrance of Allah and the like.’ Another sources say; On the eve of Ashura offer 4 rakats Nafl Salat as follows: In every rakah after Surah Fatiha recite "Ayat al-Kursi" once and Surah Ikhlas 3 times. After completing read 100 salawat and Surah Ikhlas 100 times. Allah Ta’ala will purify such a person of all their sins and grant them endless bounties and blessings in paradise.

The Prophets would fast the Day of ‘Ashura'

"It is the day of ‘Ashura. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) has not made fasting obligatory for you. But I am fasting. He who likes to observe fast among you should do so, and he who likes not to observe it (does not have to) observe it." Hadith

any time after sunrise and before sunset, or listens to its recitation from someone else, Allah Ta’ala will certainly make it an insurance for a years’ life for him, by keeping death away from him.

However, if one is to become the victim of death in that year, they will by some strange coincidence not remember to recite it. One should engage in 'Ibadah on the night of Ashura. He will receive much Reward from it. One should recite Dua Ashura on the 10th of Muharram having taken a ghusl [complete bath rinsing mouth and nose in the process] the day before. He should recite four nafil rakahs with one niyyah-(intentions). In every rakah, Surah Fatiha once, then Surat al-Ikhlas 15 times and after taslim [salaams] he should recite this Dua' once with the (last part repeated 7 times) The Reward- thawab of the salat should be sent on the arwah-souls of Sayyidayn wa Shahidayn Imams Hasan and Hazrat Hussayn Ridhwan Allahu ta 'ala alaihim ajma'een. It will bring the reciter a lot of Reward- thawab as well.

Because of the reciter having done this, Sayyidayn wa Shahidayn wa Imamayn Hassan and Husayn will do Shifa (intercede) for him on the Day of Judgement. The adaab of this particular day is to make ghusl, fast and break fast, make salaat, make Dua', visit the sick, be kind to orphans and make peace between to disputants.

What to do on Ashura
On the 9th and 10th of Muharram, one should fast. If it is not possible to fast on both days, then every effort should be made to fast on the 10th day of Muharram, as there is great reward for this fast. The following are some of the desirable acts one should do on the day of Ashura: 1. To observe fast on this day. 2. To give as much charity as you can afford. 3. To perform Nafl Salat prayers. 4. To recite *Surah Ikhlas 1000 times.* 5. To visit and be in the company of pious Ulema. 6. To place a hand of affection on an orphan’s head. 7. To give generously to one’s relatives. 8. To put surma in one’s eyes. 9. To take a bath. 10. To cut one’s nails. 11. To visit the sick. 12. To establish friendly ties with one’s enemies. 13. To recite Dua Ashura - Below post that) 14. To visit the shrines of Awliyas and the graves of Muslims.
Imam Hussain (Radi Allah Anhu) and his companions were martyred on the tenth of this month.
--------------------------- Taken from the author of Kanz al-Najah wa Surur (Ba'alawi text) maintains that on ‘Ashura, ‘One should stay up the whole night in worship, reciting the Quran or making remembrance of Allah and the like.’ He also states that, ‘it is recommended on this day to perform that which is authenticated [from the Prophet (peace be upon him) in relation to right actions]. Some of them [i.e. the scholars] numbered ten deeds; Prayer, sending prayers upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), visiting family relations, charity, ghusl, wearing kohl, visiting a scholar, visiting the sick, caressing the head of a orphan, and spending upon ones family.’ Of the most significant deeds that the aforementioned author specifies is ‘to beseech Allah as this has an immense benefit.’ May Allah – Most High – allow his needy slaves to benefit from this blessed month and this sacred day, amin.

From Sheikh Yusuf Al-Nabahani qaddas Allahu sirru:
In the month of Muharram the tragic events of Karbala are re-enacted. (This is not normal for the majority of Sunni communities but this is specific for some communities of the indo-paks and the Turks) Yet none go into the detail that the latter do (indo-paks), as others mention it briefly, and not in the agonising detail that is vividly painted for us.... Final remarks: We find this story difficult to comprehend at times and sometimes find it difficult to think about. We would like to see this event commemorated but in a rational and normal manner like the rest of the Muslim world. We do not mean to offend people but we really need to look how we manipulate people’s emotions because this is plainly wrong. If we really want to practice love towards the Ahl al-bayt them we should honour them instead of using the murder of one of forefathers as an event that we rally around them once a year and spend the rest of the year opposing them. Taken from Sheikh Yusuf Al-Nabahani (may Allah show him mercy) is one of the greatest scholars of Islam and we drew heavily from his work on Endless nobility of Ahl Al Bayt. My own notes: Remember that Muharram is the Month of God, the Month of Forgiveness, a Month of Tawba to Allah for this Mercy to forgive Sins, and Fasting this day Allah for for forgives Sins; Its a Major Sunnah Fast on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said that the fast on the 10th of Muharram atones for the sins of the preceding year. [Sahih Muslim] What is key to remember; Fasting Forgives Sins of the preceding year, thus its first 10 days especially are for Forgiveness and Tawba. These 10 Days are the Days of (Tawba/ and Mercy) so turn towards your Lord for He Forgives your Sins. It has been related that they are the ten with which God made the forty-day term of Moses complete. It was related that Wahb b. Munabbih said, God, exalted be He, revealed to Moses ‘Order your people to draw near to me in the first ten days of al-Muharram. Then on the tenth day let them come unto Me such that I will (Forgive them). (Tabarani-fil-Saghir, V2,)
